Case Study: Handling Racial Slurs among Students

Background

You are a white female fourth-grade teacher in a suburban school with about 80 percent white students, 10 percent Hispanic students, 8 percent Asian, and 2 percent African American. Your class has no African-American student in it. Mr. Becks, a fellow fourth-grade teacher is an African-American man. He has one African-American student in his classroom. Mr. Becks is your team-teacher. You work together on a number of projects, including physical education (PE).

The Problem

One day during PE, Stanley, the one African-American student in Mr. Becks’s class, comes to you to complain that Andrew, a white student in your class, used the “N” word on him. Andrew’s parents are known racists. They believe in the superiority of the white race, and they have often said openly that they could use whatever racial slur they choose to use; it is their civil right.
